European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X‑ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our Undulator Systems group we are looking for a

Mechatronic / Electronic Engineer (f/m/d)


The successful candidate shall contribute to the operation and maintenance of the undulator systems at European XFEL. In particular, the tasks include:

  • Working in close collaboration with European XFEL and DESY groups to maintain and keep reliable operation of the undulator systems
  • Development and maintenance of the hardware for the undulator systems
  • On-call duty to solve urgent issues related to the operation of the undulator systems

  • Degree in mechatronics or electronics engineering or similar
  • Proven knowledge of systems integration
  • Proven knowledge of systems of scientific measurements electronics
  • Experience or willingness in working with software engineers to track issues
  • Knowledge of Beckhoff Automation Technology, TwinCAT, PLC or any other real-time control systems is considered an asset
  • Availability to participate in shifts outside regular working hours
  • Proactive work approach, excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multilingual, multidisciplinary team with English as working language. Knowledge of German is an asset
