For the "Vector Biology" department we are looking for a

Technical Assistant (m/f/d)

– Full-time/​Part-time –
– Initially limited to two years –


  • Work in the laboratory's parasite cell culture platform (security level 2)
    • Cultivation and propagation of the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) in a human blood cell culture
    • Blood smears and qualified evaluation of the infection stages of the parasite
    • Organization, planning, and other general tasks in cell culture
  • Work in the laboratory's insect breeding and rearing platform
    • Assisted guidance of the mosquito cycle from egg‑laying to adult mosquito: floating eggs, splitting and feeding larvae, feeding mosquitoes on human blood
    • General insectary cleaning and order maintenance
    • Mosquito dissection and parasite loads analysis (midgut and salivary glands)
  • Work in the laboratory's animal experiment platform
    • Assistance with animal experiments (anaesthesia, blood sampling, infections, organ collection)
    • Organizational tasks (ordering, handling the PyRAT database)
    • Annual trainings
  • Other tasks and requirements in the laboratory
    • Performing FACS measurements
    • General laboratory tasks, e.g. in the laboratory kitchen and in laboratory organization
    • Strong teamwork

  • Certified qualification as a technical assistant (MTA, BTA) or biology laboratory technician; career starters welcome
  • Certificate for animal experimentation (FELASA B) desirable
  • The nature of the job requires a high level of responsibility and diligence, the ability to work in a structured, precise, and independent manner, and a moderate to high level of physical activity and mobility to handle mosquito cultures and containers
  • Motivation to work regularly in an insect collection and to become skilled in Anopheles-related techniques
  • Reliability, team-oriented work, and willingness to learn
  • The successful candidate must be able to communicate in both written and verbal English
