The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is one of the leading centers for fusion research and is enga­ged in develo­ping the physical founda­tions for a future fusion power plant. The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers an oppor­tunity to parti­cipate in a post­doctorate program within the division Physics of the Plasma Edge (E2) to perform research acti­vities at the ASDEX Upgrade fusion experiment (AUG). We are looking for a

PhD Experimental Physicist (m/f/div) – Microwave Diagnostics in High-Temperature Plasma Research


  • Conduct research on plasma dynamics in a fusion experiment
  • Operation and further development of microwave techno­logy and its data acquisi­tion to probe the electron temperature in a fusion plasma based on the electron cyclo­tron emission
  • Develop and maintain suitable control software for communi­cation and setup of the electron cyclotron emission diagnostics
  • Explore applications for real-time control of temperature profiles

  • PhD in experimental physics
  • Knowledge of plasma physics (preferable high-temperature plasmas)
  • Experience and knowledge of electronics and micro­wave technology

  • Experience in programming of application software in Python and C
  • Ability to present complex scientific and technical content in English
  • Interest to work in a scientific environ­ment and with an international team

The position is limited to a duration of two years. The salary is based on the assign­ment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the Collec­tive Agree­ment for the Public Service (TVöD Bund).
