The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF), based at the research campus Garching near Munich, Germany, is a competence center of the Max Planck Society (MPG). The MPCDF operates large supercomputers comprised of more than 10,000 of nodes and storage systems hosting data of several hundreds of petabytes, both online on disks and offline on tape media.

A stable, scalable, and high-performance network infrastructure enabling scientists all around the globe to access aforementioned systems is key to MPCDFs success.

The MPCDF is looking for

As part of our network team, the applicants will be responsible for the development and operation of MPCDFs network infrastructure. Within our team, you will ensure that our core network and firewall systems operate in a secure, stable, and well performing manner. Using in-depth information gathered from proactive monitoring tools, combined with feedback from our partners located at other insti­tu­tions of the MPG in Germany, you will contribute to the further extension of our systems – both in terms of hardware expansion and design evolution.

Your responsibilities will include network design and operation of Layer 2 and Layer 3 devices like switches and routers, redundant firewalls, VPN gateways, and DNS services. Furthermore, you will be involved in establishing dedicated peer-to-peer VPN connections via our internet service provider DFN (Deutsches Forschungsnetz) to other locations of the MPG in Germany. Finally, you will participate in broadening the availability of IPv6 within our infrastructure.


  • University degree (B. Sc.) in computer science or a comparable qualification with several years of professional experience
  • Communicative team player with the ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Proficient in IPv4, IPv6, and associated routing protocols (OSPF, BGP)
  • Strong understanding of network protocols to effectively manage firewalls
  • Advanced experience in automating network tasks for improved efficiency
  • Experience with Linux systems and scripting languages
  • Proficient in spoken and written English (B2)

The positions – preferred full-time, but also with option for part-time employment – start as soon as possible and are initially limited to a period of two years, with an option for a permanent position. Salary will be based on experience and education, up to salary group E 13 TVöD.
