Research assistant for AAI and federated services project ROCK-IT

This position is part of the Helmholtz ROCK-IT (remote, operando controlled, knowledge-driven, IT‑based) project, with the goal to develop and establish fully automatic measurements using different synchrotron radiation-based techniques in the field of catalysis. ROCK-IT is a collaboration between Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Karlsruher lnstitut für Technologie (KIT). The centers are working closely together with the goal of establishing similar and ideally exchangeable installations at the different research centers. The position is affiliated with the DESY IT department and strongly linked to the Photon Science department, which supports beamlines at the X-ray laser FLASH and the synchrotron radiation source PETRA Ill. Within the scope of the Rock-IT project we are a team of scientists and engineers working closely together to develop and implement experiment control systems that are optimized for new methods used in high-throughput experiments that offer connectivity to ML-based online data analysis. For our developments we aim at providing the highest possible degree of automation e.g. by using robotic arms and ML supported data analysis.


  • You contribute to the integration of the Helmholtz wide AAI Infrastructure into portals and applications at the local Helmholtz Centers, particularly at the Photon Beamlines
  • You are engaged in the creation and enhancement of software adapters designed to bridge third-party software with the Helmholtz federated AAI systems, utilizing OpenID Connect (OIDC) among other protocols
  • You take charge of deploying AAI services into production environments and oversee their ongoing operation
  • You will participate and contribute to Helmholtz wide workshops and conferences in the context of the ROCK-IT project

  • You have completed a master's degree in computer science, physics, mathematics or related subject, or comparable knowledge
  • You have good knowledge of a modern computing language, preferably in relation to AAI mechanisms
  • Basic knowledge in modern cloud infrastructures, like OpenStack, Kubernetes and similar would be of advantage
  • Basic knowledge in a natural science, preferably in science with photons would be of advantage
  • Basic experience in working in projects with geographically distributed partners would be of advantage
  • You are a team player, like traveling and enjoy working in large international teams
  • You have good spoken and written command of the English language
