Are you passionate about driving labor automation in AgTech? We are in search of an experienced, motivated, inquisitive, and results-oriented individual to assume the pivotal position of Lead System Engineer in our newly formed AgTech department. ZEISS started a large strategic initiative to leverage our capabilities to bring labor automation solutions to high-end greenhouses, with an initial focus on robotics. Therefore, we established a dedicated team to drive this effort with a start-up like mindset within ZEISS. As the selected candidate, you will play a crucial role in defining the overall system, making key technology choices, supporting IP strategy, leading & building diverse R&D teams, and leveraging deep technology expertise to drive solution development. Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders is essential as well as maintaining proximity to the customers and R&D teams will ensure customer-oriented and agile product development. Primary responsibilities include:

Lead system design and architecture for labor automation solutions in greenhouses and selection of required components

Translation of customer needs into technical requirements

Coordination of different engineering disciplines (software, mechanical, electrical, optical…)

Support development and implementation of AI algorithm in the system

Support integration of components and deployment of prototypes, products and updates
-
Startup, testing and validation of prototypes and MVPs
-
Performing system optimization and performance tuning
-
Support overall R&D activities and discuss & challenge new ideas

Project Management
-
A degree with excellent grades in natural science or engineering, PhD or MBA as a plus
-
Proven extensive professional work experience as a (lead) system engineer for automation solutions with a focus on robotics and machine learning gained during the last 5 years

Experience in designing systems that combine AI/ML and robotics; experience in designing optical systems a plus

Application of state-of-the-art AI/ML models to automate tasks

Creating specification catalog and system specification

Deep knowledge in relevant areas such as robotics, AI, control systems, and software development · Systems thinking and understanding of interactions between different system components

Project management in an agile environment

Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to continuously learn

Strong communication skills and empathy to manage different stakeholder needs (customer needs, R&D teams, business development…) and translate them into specifications and requirements
