The Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) is one of the largest practice-oriented higher education institutions in Bavaria. We are currently looking to fill the following position:

Institute of Power Engineering and High Voltage Technology (IEHT)
Doctoral position in high voltage material science (w/m/d)
as a part-time position (50%)

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, your place of employment will be our location in Schweinfurt.


Next-generation energy transmission relies on high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable lines. However, dielectrics under HVDC fields exhibit charge carrier formations, resulting in electric field losses and, in the worst cases, dielectric breakdown.
Understanding charge formations at the molecular level is still limited.
The prospect of the assigned PhD position at the Center of Material Science at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is to study HVDC-driven charge carrier dynamics within silicone dielectrics.
The dynamics at the molecular level will be investigated using a novel approach combining Raman spectroscopy and the Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) method.
The position includes close collaboration with a university and an industrial partner.
The Center of Material Science is embedded in the Institute of Power Engineering and High Voltage Technology, offering a highly interdisciplinary working environment.


The ideal candidate

The successful candidate should hold a university degree (e.g. master's degree or comparable university degree) in material science, electric engineering, chemistry, or a related subject.

Important to know

The position is a 3-year temporary part-time position. Recruitment and remuneration are based on therelevant regulations of the collective wage agreement of the federal states (TV-L) with all benefits customary in the public service. If you meet all requirements, your remuneration will be according to pay group 13 of the TV-L.
