Eaton Centre of Excellence has opened a new position:

Specialist Engineer - Arc Modeling and Simulation (m/f/n)

Location: Bonn

Primary function:

Specialist Engineer, Arc Modeling and Simulation Center of Excellence (AMS CoE), is responsible for the application and further development modeling and simulation methodologies of electrical arcs in the various applications in low and medium voltage power distribution products of Eaton. Developing, improving, and deploying state of the art technologies in the AMS CoE. Ensuring and improving model accuracy and applicability working together with business unit teams.


Job responsibilities:

  • Applies and enhances models for AC and DC circuit interruption as well as fault arc processes in numerous components and systems for electric utility, industrial, residential, and automotive applications.
  • Supports global diverse cross-functional teams from all global regions developing new products, generates value-added intellectual property.
  • Develops and implements new arc simulation models (physical and numerical) to enhance Eaton's simulation capabilities. Hereby cutting-edge simulation software is used and enhanced, based on commercial and self-developed software tools.
  • Stays at the leading edge of arc physics that will drive new technology development with decisive competitive advantage for Eaton, attending relevant conferences, presenting new results.
  • Cultivates and manages relationships with academic partners.
  • Communicates & coordinates with business teams that AMS CoE is supporting.
  • Maintains and defends our technology by creating patents and trade secrets.

We would like you to bring:

  • PhD degree in Plasma Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • In-depth experience with atmospheric plasma discharges, electric arcs, or streamers, as they do occur in industrial energy distribution applications, is essential.
  • Enhanced skills in numerical algorithms and simulation methods (e.g., CFD, FEM).
  • Expertise in modeling of plasmas (MHD modeling combining fluid flow and electromagnetic processes).
  • Professional use of standard CFD/FEM simulation tools like ANSYS® Fluent or Ansys® Maxwell.
  • Mastering high-level programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Fortran90, Python, Perl).
  • Experience in new product development in the area of electrical power distribution (e.g. LV/MV switching devices, LV/MV switchgear).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Fluent in oral and written English.
