The Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP investigates and develops innovative ways of early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases resulting from impaired function of the immune system.

Our Immunology, Infection and Pandemic Research IIP site in Penzberg, Munich develops novel diagnostic tools and therapeutics against infectious diseases caused by emerging viruses and bacteria, with a focus on biotechnology, molecular biology, and microbiology.


  • You will join a highly motivated, multidisciplinary team at our Penzberg site. In collaboration with partners from academia and industry, you will contribute to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic products and to scientific publications.
  • Your main responsibility lies in the production and characterization of recombinant proteins under BSL-2 conditions.
  • You will cover the entire workflow, from construct design to molecular cloning, production in different host organisms, purification, as well as biophysical characterization and interaction studies.

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, or a related field and/or equivalent experience
  • In-depth understanding of protein chemistry, including computational structure prediction/engineering tools
  • Multiple (3+) years of experience in recombinant protein production using state-of-the-art cloning and purification methodologies; additional expertise with viral proteins or antibodies would be an advantage
  • Experience with one or more biophysical methods such as DLS, SEC-MALS, or MST
  • Curiosity, creativity, and a strong motivation to implement new tools, e.g., AI­-based protein design
  • Independent and structured working style and the willingness to further expand your professional skills
  • Very good communication and writing skills in English and German
  • Strong team spirit and a high motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team in the life science field
