The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers an opportunity to work in the division “Tokamak Scenario Development (E1)”. We are looking for a

Senior Mechanical Engineer (m/f/div) to Advance Designs and Components for Present and Future Fusion Devices


  • Develop and optimize major mechanical components for fusion devices
  • Analyze and minimize mechanical, electromechanical, and thermal loads
  • Rethink how to integrate high-field magnets of various technologies into experimental reactor designs
  • Investigate the applicability of innovative technologies for design, manufacturing, and maintenance
  • Develop tools and codes to assist these tasks

  • M.Sc. / M.Eng. and Ph.D. in engineering (mechanical, electrical, nuclear, aerospace or equivalent) with a focus on the design and construction of highly stressed mechanical components
  • Experience with the design of large superconducting and cryogenic devices
  • Proficiency with FEM (Ansys) and 3D-CAD (CATIA)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and broad technological insight

  • Knowledge with data analysis and simulation (Python, MATLAB)
  • Ability to fluently present complex scientific and technical matters in English

The position is permanent. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 14 according to the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD Bund).
