Our mission is to advance the scientific knowledge of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere by developing and exploiting expertise in atmospheric physics, instrumentation, analysis and modelling to serve emerging societal needs – such as questions regarding climate change. At the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), a part-time position (75%) in the Department “Modelling of Atmospheric Processes” is available as

PhD student, “Spectral energy budget of the atmosphere” (f/m/d)

The position is offered for three years with a start date no later than 01.10.2024. The salary is according to class EG 13 TV-L.
The position is embedded in the DFG-CRC 181 (trr-energytransfers.de/) “Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean“. The CRC 181 has the goal to improve our understanding of the energetic coupling of various processes in the atmosphere and ocean and their influences on climate and its variability. The advertised position is part of sub-project W6 “Spectral Energy Fluxes by Wave-Wave Interactions”. The aim of subproject W6 is to provide a novel understanding of the spectral energy budget and wave-wave and wave-mean flow interactions in the atmosphere and ocean.


The Department Modelling of Atmospheric Processes focuses on developing the weather and climate model ICON for applications in the mesosphere and thermosphere. The research focus of the advertised position is the spectral energy budget of the atmosphere seen in different configurations of the ICON model. The spectral energy budget is known to be sensitive to sub-grid scale parameterizations, to numerical methods used for model integration, and to horizontal and vertical model resolution. Besides the effects of resolution, the planned research assesses the effects of different types of gravity wave parameterizations, considering traditional parameterizations and novel types developed within the CRC 181. A special focus is on compensating effects between resolved and unresolved dynamics. The outcome will be a physics-based detailed assessment of the parameterizations developed within the CRC as well as an important contribution to the model development conducted at IAP.
