European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our Detector group we are looking for a

FPGA firmware developer (f/m/d)


The focus of the position is to:

  • within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, define requirements for new detector firmware development.
  • design, develop, and implement firmware for new detectors, ensuring compatibility with hardware and performance requirements.
  • test and validate newly developed firmware using test stands or prototypes, and iterate on designs as necessary.
  • document designs, implementation details, and testing procedures for future reference and replication. Maintain and update firmware for existing detectors.
  • monitor and optimize existing firmware to improve efficiency and reliability. Provide technical support and assistance to other team members as needed, sharing knowledge and expertise in FPGA firmware.

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in FPGA firmware design, in particular for detectors.
  • Proficiency in Verilog/​VHDL and FPGA design tools (e.g., Vivado, Quartus).
  • Strong understanding of digital signal processing (DSP) techniques.
  • Experience with Xilinx or Altera FPGA families.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet).
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Skilled in debugging and troubleshooting FPGA designs.
  • Excellent problem-solving and attention to detail. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
