Postdoctoral Scientist for integrated lasers and frequency comb sources

Limited: 30.04.2027 | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSPO004/2024 | Deadline: 31.07.2024 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Ultrafast Microphotonics Lab works at the intersection of ultrafast optics and integrated photonics. In our well-funded state-of-the-art laboratory, supported by DESY's outstanding research infrastructure, we explore nano-structured photonic systems to create novel chip-integrated light sources. As part of the EU‑funded EIC project femto‑iCOMB, and in collaboration with an international consortium, we are advancing innovative, low‑noise, high‑power photonic chip‑based lasers and frequency combs tailored for emerging applications in science and technology. To strengthen our team, we seek a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist with a keen interest in driving transformative technology.

  • Develop novel chip‑integrated lasers and frequency combs, from conceptualization to experimental demonstration
  • Derive design parameters for chip fabrication, based on numeric models and iterative experimental testing
  • Design and build experimental test setups, conduct experiments and analyse the data
  • Explore the underlying physics combining theoretical and experimental approaches
  • Coordinate with project partners and manage project deliverables
  • Communicate results through peer‑reviewed journals and presentations at conferences

  • PhD in physics, photonics, electrical engineering, or in a related field
  • Enjoy working collaboratively in a fast-paced field with a quick iterative process connecting idea and experiment
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and modelling of photonic systems
  • Hands-on experience in using state-of-the art optical and electrical test and measurement equipment
  • Advanced programming skills (Python) for numeric simulation, experiment control and data analysis

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well‑being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work‑life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50 %). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.
