The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, HITS, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

HITS is looking for a

Project and Communications Manager (f/m/d)

to join the Scientific Databases and Visualization group (SDBV).

The SDBV group is a partner in LiSyM-Cancer, a multidisciplinary research network funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the Framework of the National Decade Against Cancer. A second three-year funding period started on 01 July 2024.
In the LiSyM-Cancer network, molecular and cell biologists, clinical researchers and experts in mathematical modeling are jointly conducting research to investigate the development of liver cancer from pre-existing conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver or liver cirrhosis. The aim of the joint project is to identify relevant biomarkers to diagnose and prevent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at early stages.
In addition to the research collaborations, the BMBF is funding a dedicated program management to support the network as well as a central data management.


  • Close collaboration with the program director, the coordinators of the three research consortia and the data management team at HITS
  • Organization and execution of regular leadership team meetings, annual network meetings and scientists' retreats
  • Multiplicator tasks within and beyond the network, e.g. via reports and articles, website, social media
  • Organization of short movies about the network
  • Science communication with schools: organization of a project for promotion of young talents

  • You have a degree in Biology, Medicine, Computer Science, Science Communication or in a related field
  • You have already gained research experience and expertise in project and science management and/or science communication
  • First experience in event management is preferable
  • Fluency in German and English is mandatory
  • You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary working environment which requires strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management, planning skills, flexibility and an interest in science complete your profile
  • You are willing to travel within Germany

The environment of this job

You will work in a dynamic research group led by PD Dr. Wolfgang Müller. You will be based at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, where you will find first-class research environment and outstanding computational infrastructure. The SDBV Group is attractively located in the "Mathematikon" next to the Heidelberg University and University Hospital.
