European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km‑long X‑ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our Soft X-Ray Port group we are looking for a:

Student assistant for the optimization of the alignment laser system (f/m/d) max. 16 hours per week

The goal of this project is to optimize the performance of the alignment laser system (ALAS) at the SXP instrument. To this end, we need support for the following tasks:

• Redesigning the optical layout of the ALAS including the possibility to remotely control the divergence and intensity of the alignment laser beam.
• Moreover, the alignment procedure should be automatized using a pair of motorized steering mirrors in combination with a programmable software/​hardware interface.

• Bachelor degree in mechatronics, engineering, science or equivalent, ongoing Master in mechatronics, engineering, science or equivalent.
• Highly motivated to work independently.
• Interested in working with optical, mechanical and software components.
• Communicative and collaborative personality, as well as team player.
• English is the working language, hence good English skills are necessary; fluency in German is considered an asset.
