Your Role

The Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Manager is the expert and leader for the region in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) tools and methodologies. This role shares responsibility for the development and continuous improvement of the overall corporate PHA program and is responsible for the management of that program for the region, in support of the goal to protect people, property, and the environment.

The role involves working within a matrix organisational structure, interacting with peers in the Total Process Safety Technology Center, and working closely with production facilities and third party service providers – all in a multinational business environment.

The PHA Manager is the recognized expert in the region for PHA methodologies, including HAZOP, What-if and LOPA, as well as Human Factors analysis. Experience with Facility Siting Studies (FSS) and Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) is an asset, including assessment of the results of such studies and involvement in the development of solutions to address higher risk installations.

This role requires the ability to think and act strategically, bring technical and system solutions to problems, apply analytical skills to problem solving, and the ability to teach and coach colleagues in PHA tools and methodologies.

The PHA Manager reports administratively to the TPS Global Director, and partners with the PHA Manager for North America, Regional Total Process Safety (TPS) Managers and Process Safety Technology Leaders within the TPS Technology Center.

This role can be based in one of our facilities in Germany (Hamburg, Eppelheim, Berlin), The Netherlands (Europoort) or UK (Erith). And it may also include Regional Process Safety Manager responsibilities.


Responsibilities - Leading:

  • Own / co-own the corporate PHA Standard
  • Lead and manage the Process Hazard program for the region, including scheduling, planning, Terms of Reference, defining methodology and tools to be used
  • Define and own PHA templates for common process technologies
  • Conduct quality assurance / quality control of PHAs
  • Manage training program on PHA tools and methodologies
  • Coach Plant TPS Engineers and TPS Contacts
  • Certify new PHA facilitators
  • Lead complex PHAs
  • Provide guidance and interpretation of corporate process safety standards, and of industry RAGAGEP (Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices) standards and requirements

Responsibilities – Support:

  • Provide support to other activities of the TPS Technology Center:
    • Participate in local Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
    • Lead process safety training and coaching for relevant roles
    • Support business initiatives regarding external manufacturing, joint ventures, etc.
    • Serve as Process Safety SME in corporate EH&S audits
  • Provide guidance and interpretation of local regulatory requirements
  • Coaching and/or mentoring of new members of the TPS Technology Center

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Technology Center, Operations or Engineering
  • Experience with PHA tools and methodologies, including HAZOP, What-if, LOPA, Bow-tie, Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA), Human Factors analysis
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time - mostly within the region, but also internationally
  • Fluent in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as in Operations as a Technology Engineer, Production Engineer or Process Engineer
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to speak one or more languages beyond English in use in the business unit
