The Max Planck Society is Germany's premier research organization. The 86 Max Planck Institutes conduct research at highest levels, in the service of the general public, in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.
The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) is located at the Science Campus Hamburg‑Bahrenfeld and investigates dynamical phenomena within matter down to the elementary timescales of atomic and electronic motions, the femtosecond or attosecond timescale. The focus is on the use of short wavelength ultrafast probes, such as X‑rays or electron pulses, which are capable of measuring atomic and electronic structures in matter of all kinds.
The MPSD currently consists of three scientific departments focusing on solid-state physics and theoretical methods in these fields. The MPSD is a partner in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL), collaborating with the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), European XFEL (EuXFEL) and the University of Hamburg in the development of science based on the X‑ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs).

Physical Laboratory Technician (m/f/x)
As a Physical Laboratory Technician, you will play a central role in our group, overseeing the laboratory infrastructure and operations. This includes multiple large cryostats operating at ultra-low temperatures (‑269 °C) and high magnetic fields, as well as a range of precision instruments for electrical and optical experiments and nanofabrication. You will oversee the laboratories' technical development, safe operation and maintenance of these systems. You will also support scientific modifications in collaboration with our researchers.
- designing, planning, and preparing installation sites and supporting the installation of new equipment
- training students and scientists in the operation of cryogenic systems or other large scientific equipment
- designing new and improved setups and liaising with the institute's mechanical and electrical workshops or the facility management
- maintenance responsibilities include tracking schedules, servicing or organizing of pumps, compressors and other instrumentation, troubleshooting and monitoring operation
- building and maintaining a centralized database for experimental designs and technical drawings
We seek a highly motivated and dynamic individual with a hands-on mentality to join our international scientific environment. The ideal candidate has a strong background in physics, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering. A university degree in one of these fields is desirable but not mandatory. Proficiency in CAD software, a solid understanding of electrical circuits and prior experience with vacuum technology, including safety protocols, pumps, pressure connectors, and vacuum fittings, is essential. Familiarity with programming languages such as LabView or Python is a plus but not required. The successful candidate should enjoy a collaborative, international and diverse team. A very good command of both German and English is required for effective communication with scientists and other technical staff.
