AI and HPC Infrastructure Specialist

Limited: 2 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FHMA009/2025 | Deadline: 01.04.2025 | Full-time/Part-time

The DESY group "Information Technology" (IT) is participating in a variety of high profile national and European projects, evaluating new and innovative IT technologies. One of DESY's key initiatives, in close collaboration with partners from the Helmholtz Alliance, is to establish a platform that enables industry to transform the complex challenges posed by the rapidly evolving AI landscape into opportunities for advancing efficiency and quality in scientific research. To achieve this, DESY is establishing a dedicated team of AI and infrastructure experts, spanning the entire spectrum from the theoretical foundations of AI to the practical implementation of solutions on large-scale infrastructures. While all team members are expected to have a broad understanding of the entire technology stack, this position will primarily focus on the practical implementation and deployment aspects.


  • Analyse requirements on tools and infrastructure for AI development, training, and operations
  • Propose concepts for efficient integration into the existing compute and storage infrastructure
  • Build prototype services and support AI experts in their use of the prototypes
  • Collaborate closely with AI engineers, IT specialists, and domain scientists to ensure high-quality service availability
  • Review the infrastructure in view of a later production with usability, manageability, scalability and security in mind

  • You have completed a master's degree in computer science or comparable knowledge
  • You can offer a strong expertise in Linux based large scale data processing environments
  • You have extensive experience with HPC systems, working with scheduling systems and running containerised applications
  • You have experience with AI tools supporting the training, validation, and inference processes
  • You have a collaborative mindset and the ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team
  • Basic knowledge of the German language is an asset
