Job Description

The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is a leading international research institute that uses and develops biophysical, biochemical and computational methods to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of cellular systems at the molecular scale. It has about 200 employees from more than 25 countries and is located on the Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt am Main. Together with the MPI of Brain Research, we operate a joint mass spectrometry lab to develop MS‑based methods for projects at both institutes. In addition to supporting ongoing scientific projects, we also develop, customize and establish new methods and instruments. For our team running the central facility for mass spectrometry, we are looking for an

Engineer or Technician for the Proteomics Facility (m/f/d)

This is a full-time position, starting as soon as possible and initially limited to two years. The position may become permanent afterwards and will be paid according to the TVöD (German public service) salary scale. Social benefits correspond to those of the public service.


  • Support and maintenance of LC‑MS instruments, performance monitoring (calibration, tuning, QC measurements), instrument troubleshooting and cleaning
  • Routine sample measurements and data analyses
  • Acquisition, evaluation and analysis of LC‑MS data in scientific projects
  • Development of sample preparation and LC‑MS methods for scientific projects

  • Completed education as a technical assistant, ideally with work experience, or completed university education as Engineer (m/f/d) or Master/​Diploma in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a similar subject
  • Experience using mass spectrometers and HPLC systems (ideally Thermo and Bruker)
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English for evaluation and presentation of scientific data and for exchange with our international colleagues
  • Highly motivated, and ability to work accurately and independently
  • Team-oriented personality with excellent communication skills

The following additional qualifications are advantageous:

  • Experience with analysis of DIA and DDA data, search engines and statistics
  • Bioinformatics skills and coding
  • Experience in Lipidomics and Crosslinking‑MS
  • Experience in working in a mass spectrometry facility
  • Knowledge of liquid handling automation
