Job Description

Since 1962, Bavarian universities and research institutions have relied on the IT expertise of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. When it comes to the digital transformation of science, we are traditionally ahead of the game.


As part of the DFG-funded project „SOS: Serverless-Scientific-Computing und -Engineering für Erdbeobachtungs- und Nachhaltigkeitsforschung“, LRZ supports the setup, evaluation and optimization of a development and execution environment for earth observation (EO) processing workflows. The SOS project is carried out in collaboration with the Chair of Software Engineering at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU), the Chair of Communication Networks at JMU, the Department of Remote Sensing at JMU, the Max-Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPIAB) and the German Remote Sensing Data Center at DLR.

Your Role and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with university researchers in developing abstraction layers, interoperable interfaces, and specialized services to seamlessly integrate cloud-native and traditional HPC environments with focus on:

- Optimization of Task Deployment and Resource Provisioning

- Energy-efficient execution strategies, autoscaling, and elastic provisioning to enhance overall system efficiency

- Secure user and data management

  • Identify and implement monitoring services optimized for serverless computing environments


  • PhD or Master's degree in computer science or related fields
  • Conceptual understanding of the scientific programming landscape
  • Experience with deployment and execution of applications on cloud and high-performance systems (Slurm, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Comfortable working with Linux environment and the command line interface
  • Experience with a programming language such as C, C++, Rust or Go
  • Strong understanding of network architectures, data transfer protocols and distributed file systems
  • Ability to present results clearly and understandably in reports, diagrams, etc.
  • Fluent spoken and written German and English (C1 level)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of publishing and presenting results at scientific conferences and meetings
  • Interest in mentoring student research projects and in teaching/education
  • Good understanding of typical computational kernels in HPC or data analytics applications
  • Experience designing secure and scalable interfaces

up to E 13, see Entgelttabelle TV-L

Annual leave / compensatory time off
