PhD Student Position in HBV and Liver Fibrosis Research (We are targeting applicants of all genders) Part Time (26h/week) | limited to 12 months | Announcement number: 131-2025 The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Goethe University Hospital Frankfurt offers comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for liver and digestive diseases. The research group led by Dr. Görgülü, Clinician Scientist, is part of the DFG-funded INDEEP program and focuses on understanding the impact of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) mutations on liver fibrosis and inflammatory processes. Our lab operates within an innovative research environment and is embedded in a strong collaborative network that includes both national and international partners. We are supported by grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and Goethe University, allowing us to conduct cutting-edge translational research. Our team employs state-of-the-art technologies, including multiplex fluorescent-bead assays, phosphoblotting, and co-culture systems with human immune cells, to analyze the role of HBV in cellular signaling pathways, immune responses, and fibrosis development. Specifically, we investigate kinase signaling pathways, cytokine profiles, and receptor expression patterns, aiming to uncover new insights into HBV-induced liver pathology and to explore potential therapeutic targets. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to work on a clinically relevant project with direct implications for the management of chronic HBV infections. Your role Conduct analysis of upregulated/dysregulated kinases using kinase array validation Examine the effects of HBV on hepatic stellate cell (HSC) proliferation through ERK/MAPK/PDGF signaling, assessing specific fibrosis markers Profile cytokine/chemokine production in HSCs after transfection with HBV constructs and analyze HBV-transfected HSC impact on T-cell activation and regulatory T-cell induction in co-culture with human PBMCs Investigate insulin receptor signaling modulation by different HBV mutants, focusing on insulin receptor surface expression and IRS1/2 phosphorylation Independently plan, execute, and analyze experiments using advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques (e.g., tissue culture, flow cytometry, Western blotting) Who you are Master degree or equivalent in molecular medicine, biology, biochemistry or related fields Solid hands-on research experience in basic cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology methods Fascination and motivation for biomedical research in the field of virology Enthusiasm to learn and implement novel technologies High motivation for experimental lab work and data presentation Ability to work in a team, sense of responsibility and proactivity Basic knowledge in MS office (Word, Excel) Fluent English Due to legal regulations, valid proof of measles immunity / measles vaccination is required.
