GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. For the department Linac (LIN) we are looking for two
Accelerator Physicists or Engineers (all genders)
Reference: 24.132-6680
to participate in the operation and development of the GSI linear accelerator UNILAC (UNIversal Linear ACcelerator). Tasks and responsibilities include the coordination of UNILAC operation and the shutdown work relating to this facility, but also medium and long-term development tasks in the field of heavy ion linear accelerators, operating with world-class performances. Part of the work time is spent in support for the ongoing construction project FAIR-SFRS, the super fragment separator and its beam lines.
One work focus is:
- Responsibility and/or cooperation in all tasks concerning the machine coordination of GSI-UNILAC
- Assistance in the coordination of shutdown work
- Management and/or collaboration on assorted UNILAC upgrade projects
- On a longer-term time scale, the safety responsibility for UNILAC operation.
Other tasks include:
- Development of beam dynamics codes
- Beam dynamics support for the high current heavy ion UNILAC operation
- Collaboration in the sub-project “Longitudinal beam matching”
- Active participation in the FAIR-UNILAC upgrade program
Mandatory:
- Active participation in linear accelerator development tasks, including UNILAC and possible future linacs (e.g. HELIAC)
- Participation in the FAIR Super-FRS-project
- University Master Degree in physics or engineering sciences or comparable qualification
- Ability and interest to work with mechanical systems and accelerator installations
- Knowledge in Radio Frequency, vacuum technology, beam dynamics and other relevant fields of accelerator technology and physics
- Knowledge and interest in the design and construction of RF accelerator cavities and in the design of linear accelerators
- Team-oriented and safe working methods
- Good language skills in English and a strong commitment to learn German are mandatory
The following qualifications and skills are desirable:
- A PhD in accelerator science or physics
- Experience in the operation of ion or heavy ion accelerators
- Experience in the coordination of shutdown work in accelerator facilities
- Experience in the management and implementation of accelerator projects
- Experience in the assembly and maintenance of complex technical systems
