The Institute of Active Polymers at Hereon performs research on multifunctional polymer materials and their interaction with living systems. Information-based design approaches aim at sustainable innovations for regenerative medicine, age‑appropriate living and bio‑based consumer products. The institute is located at the Hereon campus in Teltow near Berlin.

The department of Digital Design and Processing in the Institute of Active Polymers at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon invites applications for a Research Scientist in Smart Implant Covering. At the department of Digital Design and Processing we are working in close collaboration with colleagues at Charité –Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Jointly, we are developing clinically led, materials-oriented solutions to key healthcare issues, particularly in cardiac and vascular field. Our key challenge is developing advanced implantable technologies to provide doctors and patients with better implants and improved clinical outcomes. We have excellent infrastructure for manufacturing and processing materials, rapid prototyping and characterisation of materials and medical devices. We are looking for motivated scientists to join our team.

The post is funded by 3rd party resources. The position is divided between two institutions, where the selected candidate will receive 1 year contracts in each, without the need of further application process.

The position is full-time (39 hours/week).


  • Characterization of cardiac implants and their validation in various anatomies in simulated environment and animal tissue
  • Development and characterisation of sensing system for implants
  • Analysis and processing of data from experimental studies
  • Integration of implant components and testing in simulated environments, animal tissue and animal models

  • Completed master's degree or PhD in the field of biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics or other relevant fields

Expertise and experience:

  • Required:
  • Experience in independent scientific work
  • Experience in experimental characterisation of materials, medical devices and/or sensors
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Excellent scientific writing and presentation skills

  • Nice to have experience in:
  • Biofabrication, additive manufacturing (3D printing, electrospinning, bioprinting, extrusion)
  • Characterisation of mechanical properties of materials
  • Characterisation of electrical properties of materials
  • Microscopy and spectroscopy methods for materials characterisation
  • Investigations of material cells interactions
  • Excellent publications track record in the relevant field
  • Knowledge of IP protection and patent application process
  • Experience in working with medical devices
  • Experience in prototyping of medical devices
  • Knowledge of testing protocols for medical devices with electronics within EU and FDA regulations
  • Experience in work with soft tissue, animal tissue, animal models or similar
