Job Description
For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:
Scientist at SAXMAT Beamline P62
Limited: 3 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSMA034/2024 | Deadline: open | Full-time/Part-time
DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
The Small-Angle X-ray Scattering beamline for materials research (SAXMAT) at the Synchrotron Radiation Source PETRA III has been in normal user operation since 2022 and serves simultaneous SAXS and WAXS measurements for soft and hard condensed matter research. The beamline is particularly designed for anomalous scattering (3.5-35.0 keV) as well as computed tomography using the scattering contrast as signal. We are looking for a scientist who will strengthen the P62 team, especially in the field of catalysis, battery or nano-particle synthesis. The candidate will be involved in user support at the beamline and should work closely with external collaborators on scientific projects. The candidate should design and implement appropriate instrumentation (sample environments), employ experimental control, data reduction, evaluation software and develop software as necessary. These tasks will proceed in close collaboration with the beamline team members and technical service groups.
- Technical and scientific user support of experiments at the SAXMAT beamline P62
- Support of the installation and commissioning of new equipment at the beamline
- Take part in the development of experiment control and analysis software based on Tango/Sardana/Spock and Python
- Development of an own independent research program and participation in collaborative projects with external groups at beamline P62
- Completed academic higher education (master or diploma) in physics, chemistry or a related field or equivalent expertise, skills and experience
- PhD in physics, chemistry or equivalent related disciplines
- Experience with small-angle X-ray scattering (preferably hard condensed matter) instrumentation
- Experience with data acquisition control software and scientific programming techniques
- Knowledge in nano-particle research in the framework of catalysis or battery or other research areas
- Excellent knowledge of English and teamwork abilities
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work‑life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50 %). As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.
