Fairtrade International is the international non-profit, multi stakeholder body that is responsible for the strategic direction of Fairtrade, sets Fairtrade standards and supports producers. Based in Bonn, Germany the we are a culturally diverse team of more than 30 nationalities.


Together with a highly motivated HR Team, the Head of HR is responsible for:
  • all aspects of operational HR management, planning and development
  • delivering a high quality service to employees and line managers on all HR-related aspects
  • providing guidance to the Senior Management Team and the Executive Director, and recommending pragmatic solutions in line with best practices
  • providing senior support to Fairtrade International's People Committee, a sub-committee of the Fairtrade International Board
  • leading the work with Fairtrade International's Works Council for a trustful collaboration
  • Implement processes for the measurement and management of performance and management succession planning so as to ensure that employees are appropriately developed and rewarded
  • ensuring a safe and healthy work environment and a trustful & collaborative work place culture
  • on an ongoing basis maintaining a skills matrix of the organisation's workforce, and developing and implementing a succession planning system
  • leading the day-to-day work of the HR team. Ensuring that resources are focused on key objectives and projects are delivered on time and within budget
  • serving as a supportive point of contact, offering guidance and ensuring employees feel comfortable and supported during a grievance resolution process

Profound, hands-on knowledge in the full range of the daily HR business
  • Direct experience of organizational transformation
  • Good knowledge of current employment legislation, the Works Constitution Act and HR practices
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Collaborative and supportive approach to human resource management
  • Fluency in German and English essential with experience working in English. Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
Experience and Education:
  • A University degree in a relevant area (Human Resources, Labour Law etc.)
  • A minimum of 12 years' experience in human resource management and in managing a team of HR professionals
  • Experience of working in an international organization in Europe, including recruiting and employing people internationally

  • This is a full-time position (38.5 hours) within Fairtrade International. An initial two-year contract is offered.
  • Location is at Fairtrade International offices in Bonn with the option of mobile working in Germany according to Fairtrade International's regulations.
  • The office language is English.
  • 30 days holiday.
  • Salary as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Gross- und Außenhandel NRW) group VIb (between 83.000 EUR and 90.000 EUR) commensurate with the candidate's skills and qualifications. The salary includes a holiday bonus and a 13th salary.
