Mechanical Engineer (m/f/div) for the Development of the Neutral Beam Source

As a member of the Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) team at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching, the candidate will contribute to the development of RF-driven negative ion sources for heating the plasma of fusion experiments (i.e. ITER) up to 100 million Kelvin. He / She will provide tech­nical support to the NBI test facilities BATMAN Upgrade and ELISE at the IPP by implementing test bed upgrades, source modifications, and diagnostic improvements. The work will be carried out in Garching together with the IPP NBI team.


  • Ensure the reliable operation of the test facilities ELISE and BATMAN Upgrade with all sub­systems such as vacuum pumps, cooling system
  • Carry out upgrades of the test beds, such as source modifications, diagnostic improve­ments, or other test bed equipment, in particular:
    • Design of modified and new components, including structural, thermal, and fluid dynamic calculations
    • Manage the procurement of components either from industry or in-house manu­facturing
    • Supervise assembly and installation and assist in the commis­sioning of these components
  • Write technical reports and present them at meetings and conferences
  • Liaise with other European partners working in the same field, in particular with the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) in Padova

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering
  • Experience in engineering projects
  • Good expertise of vacuum and cooling technology
  • Very good knowledge of German and English required
  • Good expertise of CAD software, especially CATIA V5
  • Good knowledge of using FEM (Ansys) to perform struc­tural, thermal, and fluid dynamic calculations
  • Good know-how of negative ion source physics and technology is an asset
  • Experience in running experiments and program­ming is an advantage
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, and communi­cation skills, high competence in teamwork

The position will be based in Garching, Germany, and is limited until December 31, 2025. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD Bund). The selected candidate has to be approved by EUROfusion in a second application process.
