The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT is part of the Fraunhofer Society. With approximately 190 employees at our locations in Itzehoe and Kiel, we play a leading role by working with key partners from industry and research on a national and international level.
The »Power Electronics« department focuses on developing advanced active and passive power semiconductor components based on silicon and gallium nitride. We also integrate them into power electronic systems and develop battery storage and high-performance storage systems.


  • Research in the field of high-power DC-DC and DC-AC converters (considering in particular modular structures) for MV and LV (possibly hybrid) grids, as well as their interfacing
  • Research on circuit breakers (solid-state and hybrid), derating thereof using power converters for external fault protection and on fault tolerance strategies
  • Communicate your results both internally and externally and collaborate with scientists in your team
  • Support our scientific profil trough publications and the acquisition of research and industrial projects

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, or a comparable qualification in a related field
  • Experience with design and testing (including control) of high-power converters, in particular modular topologies (e.g., MMC) for DC-DC and DC-AC conversion
  • Practical experience with medium voltage (MVDC, MVAC) devices and converters is beneficial
  • A high degree of independence, initiative, and commitment, combined with a high level of curiosity and willingness to learn
  • Ability to quickly familiarize with new problems and to take responsibility in a team environment
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
