Job Description

For the Institute of Embedded Systems at the Hamburg University of Technology for the earliest possible date, we are looking for a:

Post-Doctoral Researcher / Senior Engineer

full-time and permanent. The remuneration is in accordance with 14 TV-L.

No.: 19324WE13

At the heart of TU Hamburg's research, teaching and transfer of technology is the guiding principle of developing technology for people. The TU Hamburg sees itself in this context as a family-friendly and sustainable university with high performance and quality standards that strives for excellence in all its research fields. Interdisciplinarity, innovation, regionality and internationality are binding principles in our actions.

With currently around 8.000 students, 110 professors and 1.650 employees, the TU Hamburg is characterized by short decision-making processes and close cooperation between the board, the institutes, the deans of studies, the research areas and the administration. We identify ourselves with a modern leadership culture and cultivate appreciative interaction.

The Institute of Embedded Systems was newly founded in March 2015 by Prof. Heiko Falk as part of TUHH's School of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Its research activities will focus on design automation techniques for embedded systems, with a particular emphasis on modelling, analysis and optimization of non-functional properties. This covers, e.g., performance, real-time constraints, energy efficiency or dependability. Targeted research topics include, but are not limited to, the design of self-explaining systems, the design of real-time capable many-core systems, certification and formal correctness of design tools, or multi-criterial optimization. One key aspect of the institute's research are compiler techniques for the automated optimization of embedded software.

Teaching activities of the Institute of Embedded Systems cover both bachelor- and master-level courses on embedded system design, compilers, computer architecture and technical computer science. The courses are complemented by seminars and, more importantly, by practical labs where students gain hands-on experience in software design for cyber-physical systems, hardware design and compiler construction.

As a Post-Doctoral Researcher / Senior Engineer in our institute, you will be directly involved in all research activities described above.

  • supporting the head of institute in the organization and implementation of the day-to-day operation of the institute regarding both research and teaching,
  • independently performing demanding research activities in the above-mentioned areas (with a focus on self-explaining systems) that necessitate senior scientific experience and qualification,
  • supporting the institute's scientific staff and independently applying for and executing third-party funded research (e.g., Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG, BMBF, European framework programmes)
  • teaching activities of four hours (SWS) per week

  • PhD with superior score in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or in a closely related field
  • recent and profound professional, scientific experience in the design of embedded systems, shown, e.g., by a strong record of publications
  • fluent in spoken and written English (C1/B2 GER)
  • friendly and open-minded communication skills
  • you enjoy teaching of students and are experienced in supervising students
  • experience in successful acquisition and implementation of third-party funded research projects is of advantage

The vacant position will be tightly coupled to the recently acquired DFG Research Training Group CAUSE. Your research interests should thus include the field of self-explaining embedded systems.

  • Permanent and high-quality post-doctoral position
  • Flexible and family-friendly working hours
  • 30 days of vacation per year
  • Company pension scheme, employment benefits to encourage capital formation
  • Company scheme for health promotion
  • Special rates in selected gyms
