GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung” in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. The “Superconducting Magnets & Testing” (SCM) department is looking for a candidate to join its “Superconducting Magnet Technology” (SCM-SMT) group:

Physicist or Engineer (all genders)

for supervision of superconducting magnet production and the testing.


The superconducting magnet will be produced by industrial partners. The acceptance test will be executed under responsible of FAIR. The successful candidate will be appointed to:

  • supervision of superconducting magnet design, production steps, factory acceptance test
  • coordination of experts for design reviews and production inspections, test programs
  • approval of factory acceptance test
  • coordination of transport of the magnet components and related components
  • coordination of assembly of the magnet and the relevant systems at FAIR
  • coordination of the site acceptance test
  • control of technical documentations, test protocol, acceptance protocols
  • communication with the manufacturer, transport companies, relevant GSI departments
  • all administrative aspects with GSI administration departments.

Supervision of superconducting magnets and the testing is conducted by a specialist, an engineer or scientist, with experience in this field, familiar with international environment. His/her responsibility is to follow up the production and coordinate and manage the testing of superconducting magnet and related components at FAIR.

The successful candidate should have:

  • University Master Degree in physics or engineering sciences (mechanical, cryogenic, electrical or electronics) or comparable qualification
  • Experience in superconducting magnets and related technical systems, especially operation and measurement techniques, preferably with focus on mechanics, cryogenics, magnetic field measurements, powering, quench detection and protection, electrical testing, sensors.
  • Structured way of working with a high degree of proactivity and responsibility. Good team skills, autonomy, and ability to work under pressure.
  • Fluent English, basic knowledge of German is an advantage.
  • Experience in coordination of production and testing activities.
  • Experience with MS-Office tools.

The position is limited until 30.06.2027. Salary is as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund), effective at GSI.
