The Business Unit Hydro Power Plants Germany operates and maintains the largest German storage portfolio and is active in all short-term power markets. The fleet of pump storage plants is an integral part of the energy transition, offering both flexibility and reliability to the system.


We, the Data Innovation team, develop and operate our own Databricks centered platform to provide actionable insights, aiming to transform our portfolio and support fossil freedom. By leveraging data, we identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and align strategies with organizational goals. Through continuous learning and new analytical techniques, we drive innovation, ensuring informed decision-making and tangible results.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will utilize a blend of mathematics, statistics, computer science and domain knowledge to address various challenges. You will craft data-driven solutions that not only resolve issues but also unlock new avenues of value, contributing to continuous business improvement and innovation.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Explore data to identify patterns and business opportunities.
  • Perform statistical analyses to derive business insights.
  • Design and conduct experiments for data-driven decisions.
  • Develop advanced algorithms for pattern recognition and predictive models.
  • Automate and optimize decision-making processes with statistical modeling and ML pipelines.
  • Using state-of-the-art ML tools for forecasting, anomaly detection, data integrity monitoring and explainable AI.
  • Validate models through rigorous testing.
  • Enhance data quality with automated cleaning strategies and identify data sources for deeper analysis.
  • Communicate analytical results to stakeholders.
  • Stay updated on data science and ML developments, e.g. by attending conferences.

Your Skills:

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a similarly quantitative field.
  • Knowledge of statistics, numerical mathematics, advanced calculus.
  • Proven expertise in academic research methods.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in programming languages such as Python and Spark for advanced analytics.
  • Advanced expertise in machine learning and AI frameworks for developing predictive models.
  • In-depth knowledge of data preprocessing, feature engineering, and ML model evaluation.
  • Proficient in using Pandas and NumPy for local transformations, pySpark for all transformation steps, and SQL for views, dashboards, and ad-hoc analysis.
  • Appropriate use of object-oriented programming and inheritance, especially in Python, with a strong commitment to and experience with best practices and linting.
  • Domain knowledge in energy markets and asset optimization for creating new value sources or improving existing business processes.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams using Git in a DevOps environment. At least 2 years of experience working collaboratively on software projects.
  • Experience working in an agile environment using the Scrum framework, along with a sense of responsibility and self-organization.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on the latest advancements in data science and machine learning.
