Job Description

For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientist in experimental particle physics

Unlimited | Starting date: 01.09.2024 | ID: FHMA012/2024 | Deadline: 10.07.2024 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

In addition to its engagement in experiments at CERN and KEK, DESY is operating, constructing and planning new on-site particle physics experiments. These mainly focus on new kinds of very lightweight elementary particles which might also constitute the dark matter in the Universe. At present, ALPS II is taking data, the construction of BabyIAXO is being prepared and MADMAX is in its prototyping phase. All experiments involve technologies very different from accelerator-based experiments, but simultaneously try to follow well-established approaches as closely as possible.
At DESY in Hamburg, the group FH-ALPS is in charge of these activities, pursued jointly in international collaborations. The successful applicant is expected to take a leading and experiment-overarching role.

  • Project management in planning and constructing on-site particle physics experiments
  • Contributions to the operation and to the scientific guidance of on-site particle physics experiments
  • Contributions to the development of corresponding detector and IT technologies
  • Engagement in the further development of experimental particle physics at DESY in general

  • Master degree in physics or equivalent qualification
  • PhD in experimental particle physics
  • Several years of experience in development, construction and utilization of largescale particle-physics experiments
  • Experience with coordination of international particle physics collaborations of physicists, engineers and technicians
  • Very good knowledge of English
  • Good knowledge of German

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work-life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.
